[Business records]. 1829-1963.

The bulk of the collection dates from 1890-1923, with extensive financial and purchasing records. Includes records from the board of directors, 1951-1956; deeds, 1879-1945; correspondence, 1909-1963; reports, 1921-1933, concerning coal and wool consumption, electrical power use, floor plans and sketches. Also contains financial records from the tenure of General Eben Sutton, including ledgers, 1879-1891; cash books, 1879-1890; corporation journals, 1890-1922; purchasing records, 1849-1922; sales records, 1901-1912; labor records, including payrolls, 1904-1919; various piece rate payrolls, 1911-1915, 1921-1927, 1923; and production records, 1891-1962. Also includes a ledger, 1896-1898, from the North Andover Mills; Sutton joined a corporation in 1867 to operate these mills, formerly known as the Hodges Mill. In 1881, Gen. Sutton bought out the other stockholders. The property was sold to M.T. Stevens & Sons in 1899 and became the Osgood Mill. Also contains papers of William Sutton (1800-1882) including will, 1869; ledger, 1868-1877; journal, 1871-1877; and purchasing ledger, 1864-1872.

William Sutton (1800-1882), the son of William and Elizabeth (Treadwell) Sutton, was born in Salem, Mass., on 26 July 1800. Sutton was a successful merchant in Salem, and from 1835 to 1880, president of the Salem Commercial Bank, later called the First National Bank of Salem. Sutton's Mills, a woolen manufacturer in North Andover, Mass., was established in 1802 by James Scholfield. In 1826, the mill was purchased by William Sutton, a wool dealer from Danvers, Mass. At his death in 1832, his son, Eben Sutton (1803-1864) ran the mill. A second son, William Sutton (1800-1882) sold his interest in the mill to his brother Eben in 1836.
